Durham Chimney & Masonry Repair recently completed a chimney repair project in Newcastle, Ontario that involved both structural fixes and correcting poor workmanship from a previous contractor.

The top portion of the chimney was rebuilt to improve durability and proper water shedding. A new stone cap was installed with a 2-inch drip edge and the correct slope, helping direct water away from the chimney and prevent future damage. This kind of detail goes a long way in extending the life of the structure.

We also repaired spalled bricks down three sides of the chimney. Since the original brick was not something local masonry suppliers carried, we had to source and order in a specific match to keep the repair consistent with the existing chimney. Matching brick size is important because even small differences can throw off the joint lines and make the repair stand out. Using the correct size also helps maintain the structural bond of the chimney.

During the process, we found serious issues inside the chimney. The flue liners were not properly supported and were left “floating,” which can lead to safety and performance problems. On top of that, debris and leftover material from the previous company had been hidden inside the stack. Unfortunately, this kind of work does happen, and it’s a good reminder to take the time to research who you hire.

All debris and improperly installed materials were removed, and the chimney was properly cleaned and rebuilt where needed to ensure it was safe and functioning as it should.
